Diesel engines work a little bit differently, since it uses compression to ignite the fuel instead of a spark plug.
However, the Hydrogen works the same way by facilitating a more complete combustion of the fuel. The amount of
fuel being delivered to the cylinder by the injectors in a diesel engine is regulated by MAF-MAP Signal and Cam Shaft
Meters.
This systems use electricity provided by the car's alternator to
split water into it's elements, hydrogen and oxygen. This type of
dissociation reaction is called electrolysis and was discovered in
1800.
These gases are then deliver into the engine to improve
combustion. Because Hydrogen is a flammable gas and burns at a
lower ignition point and at a higher temperature range than gasoline
or diesel, the energy it releases in the beginning of the combustion
process helps in the combustion of the other fuels in the cylinder..

This is similar to how light end distillates are re-formulated into gasoline to improve the octane rating and to give you a smother and more
powerful combustion stroke.
When the hydrocarbons (gasoline / diesel) are combusted in an vehicle it will produce other hydrocarbons, nitrogen oxides, carbon monoxide,
carbon dioxide and water you will also have unconsumed Oxygen and Nitrogen from this reaction.
In gasoline engines your oxygen sensor detect that there is less oxygen in the exhaust because more fuel is being
converted to CO and CO2 and in turn your computer reduces the amount of fuel being delivered to the cylinder by
the injectors to maintain Oxygen at 14.7% ratio in the exhaust.
